EurAgEng backs next generation of agricultural robotics

The European Society of Agricultural Engineers (EurAgEng) is continuing its support for the next generation of agricultural engineers through its sponsorship of the Field Robot Event, with the 2027 competition now being introduced to the robotics community.

The University of Lincoln’s Centre for Autonomous Systems is preparing for the next edition of the international, student-led competition, which challenges university teams to design, build and test autonomous robots against practical agricultural tasks.

An announcement and community discussion about Field Robot Event 2027 is scheduled as part of the ROS in the Field: Building Open Agri-Food Robotics Together workshop at the University of Lincoln on 22 October 2026. Led by Jonathan Cox and Emmanuel Soumo, the session will invite researchers, engineers and developers to contribute ideas on the capabilities future field robots should demonstrate and the challenges that could provide meaningful benchmarks for the technology.

The Field Robot Event gives students the opportunity to take engineering beyond the laboratory, testing autonomous navigation, sensing, perception and decision-making in agricultural environments. Its practical, competitive format also encourages collaboration between universities, researchers and industry.

For EurAgEng, supporting the event reflects the importance of developing engineering talent and connecting education and research with the practical demands of agriculture. Autonomous systems and robotics are likely to play an increasingly important role in future crop production, but progress depends on engineers who can combine technical expertise with an understanding of farming conditions and operational needs.

EurAgEng encourages students, academic teams and industry partners interested in agricultural robotics to follow developments and explore opportunities to participate in the next event.
