CLAAS Foundation strengthens support for the next generation of agricultural engineers
The CLAAS Foundation is marking what would have been the 100th birthday of agricultural technology pioneer Helmut Claas with new investment in young engineering talent. The Foundation is launching a dedicated Helmut Claas Scholarship for North America and increasing the first-place award for its international Helmut Claas Scholarship for bachelor’s theses from €7,200 to €10,000.
Born on 16 July 1926, Helmut Claas led and shaped the CLAAS business for decades, combining entrepreneurial drive with a long-term commitment to agricultural engineering education. The international Helmut Claas Scholarship was the Foundation’s first support programme and reflected his belief that technical progress in farming depends on skilled, motivated people entering the sector.
“Agricultural technology needs the best minds in the world – and the best minds in the world need an opportunity. Supporting the next generation is not a luxury; it is our responsibility towards the future of agriculture,” Helmut Claas said.
New Helmut Claas Scholarship for North America
Developed with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL), one of the leading US institutions for agricultural engineering, the new scholarship will support students starting agricultural engineering studies at UNL. The initiative strengthens links between European and North American engineering education and reflects the increasingly international nature of machinery development, digital farming, harvesting systems and agricultural systems technology.
For a UK agricultural engineering audience, the move is notable because it underlines the sector’s shared skills challenge: attracting capable engineers into a field where automation, data, electrification, soil protection and efficient harvesting are becoming central to farm productivity.
International scholarship funding increased
Alongside the North America award, the Foundation is increasing support for the existing international Helmut Claas Scholarship, which recognises outstanding bachelor’s theses in agricultural engineering. Raising the top award to €10,000 strengthens the incentive for students to pursue applied research and practical innovation at an early stage in their careers.
The initiatives continue Helmut Claas’s legacy by backing the engineers who will design, adapt and maintain the next generation of agricultural machinery for farms facing higher output demands, tighter margins and rapidly evolving technology.
