The competition challenged participants to combine mechanical engineering, electronics, software and artificial intelligence into robust field-ready machines capable of performing practical agricultural tasks.

The winning team from Germany secured first place across four competition categories, including autonomous navigation through curved maize rows, plant health assessment and biodiversity monitoring. Second place went to Robatic Bullseye from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, followed by FREDT from the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany.

A key theme emerging from this year's competition was the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence throughout agricultural robotics.

“Most of the teams are now using AI. Artificial intelligence has fundamentally levelled the playing field since the last event just one year ago,” said Prof. Stefan Stiene of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, one of the event organisers.

According to Stiene, modern AI development tools have reduced many of the traditional barriers associated with software development, shifting competitive advantage towards successful system integration and validation.

“Because modern AI tools can instantly deliver complex, implementable software architectures that once required years of specialised IT expertise, pure coding is now widely accessible. In the end, it is system integration and robust testing that come to the fore as the defining success factor,” he said.

The competition consisted of three days of progressively demanding tasks centred on autonomous crop production. Teams were required to navigate maize fields, identify crop health issues, monitor biodiversity and carry out precision treatment operations. A freestyle challenge on the final day encouraged participants to demonstrate innovative solutions supporting agricultural sustainability.

Projects presented during the event included robotic hoeing systems equipped with articulated manipulators, teleoperated strawberry harvesting technologies, open-source implementations of ISOBUS-compatible control systems and integrated grass-cutting and livestock-feeding concepts.

The diversity of engineering approaches highlighted the maturity of the sector. Some teams employed sophisticated sensor fusion architectures combining LiDAR, machine vision and mapping technologies, while others demonstrated reliable navigation using streamlined, low-cost camera-based systems. Vehicle designs ranged from Ackermann-steered platforms and articulated chassis to omnidirectional drive systems.

Beyond navigation, many robots incorporated advanced crop monitoring, pest detection, real-time data processing and targeted intervention capabilities, reflecting broader trends towards autonomous and data-driven farming systems.

The educational dimension of the event also remains central. Several participating institutions continue to require students to develop complete robotic platforms from first principles each year, ensuring hands-on experience in multidisciplinary engineering design.

China participated in the competition for the first time in 2026, joining teams from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Now in its fifth edition at DLG Feldtage, the Field Robot Event is organised by Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, TU Braunschweig and Agrotech Valley Forum, in cooperation with DLG.

The competition continues to provide a valuable testbed for emerging technologies that could shape the next generation of agricultural automation.

The Field Robot Event is sponsored by EurAgEng.

Related news:

University of Bonn Professorship (W3) - Agricultural Robotics

The University of Bonn is an international research university with a wide education and research profile.
